Steven Gerrard urges Rangers to forget about catching Celtic for the title
Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has said that his team can forget about challenging for the Scottish Premiership crown after their goalless draw against St Johnstone in their stadium. The Glasgow giants had the opportunity to close the gap to leaders Celtic to just three points but they squandered the chance after managing a disappointing 0-0 stalemate.
Speaking after the game, the former Liverpool star admitted that his team had a lack of leadership during the clash which contributed to a disappointing outcome. He added that the club can forget about catching their cross-town rivals Celtic for the title and need to avoid dropping further points with Aberdeen and Kilmarnock breathing down their neck.
He said: "“Right now forget titles and forget closing gaps, the reality is to perform like that across the board“
in front of 50,000, well there's your evidence. You don't need me to say this, that or the other. If you have a group of lads and they give you that when they've got the chance to close the gap to three points, when you have Aberdeen, Kilmarnock and the rest breathing down your neck, that's not what's required at Rangers when you've got the chance to close the gap. “You're miles away from it."“
Rangers are currently five points behind Celtic at the top of the standings and that deficit could extend further, should the Hoops win their game in hand against Kilmarnock on the road. In this case, Gerrard’s team have a tough task of reducing the gap between now and the end of the season but the manager will be hoping that the team can at least get on a long-winning streak to enhance their prospects of catching the table-toppers. Rangers’ next game comes against Kilmarnock in the fifth round replay of the Scottish Cup.
